Age of Empires 2 is a Real-time Strategy video game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft. Released in 1999 for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh, it is the second game in the Age of Empires series. An expansion, The Conquerors, was released in the year 2000. The Age of Kings is set in medieval times and contains 13 civilizations to play. Players aim to collect the resources they use to build cities, create armies, and defeat their enemies. There are five historically based campaigns, which limit the player to the specialized circumstances and are supported by the story. There are three additional single player modes, and it supports multiplayer. Despite using the same game engine and similar code as its predecessor, the development of The Age of Kings took a year longer than expected This forced Ensemble Studios to release Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome in 1998 instead. The design team focused on solving important issues in Age of Empires, but noted upon release that some issues still remained. The reception for the Age of Kings was very positive. The large number of new features, as well as gameplay improvements, have been applauded. The Age of Kings has received "worldwide acclaim," according to Metacritic video game review complex.

Each player has limits on the number of units they can create - the number of inhabitants - but may not immediately use up the entire potential population. The population capacity, which can be directed anywhere between 25 and 200 at intervals of 25, depends on the number of houses, castles, or city centers - the main building in the player's town - that are built. Age of Kings introduced two important new features for unit management: the Idle Villager button, which helps players locate villagers who were not assigned a mission, and the City Bell, which sends all of the player's villagers to Town Center, Castle, or a safety tower.

Othe machines, players take orders from the army representative spirit leader. Additional game modes are available for the player in The Age of Kings. One mode, Random Map, creates a map from one of the randomly selected map-generating scripts, with players starting the Dark Age with Town Center, three villagers (or more depending on civilization), and a scout unit. The game can be won through military conquest, by creating a special building known as Wonder, and keeping it in a certain place for a certain period of time, or by controlling all relics on the map for a specific period of time Deathmatch mode allows players to start with large amounts of resources, leading to a focus on military dominance, while iteratively mode each player is given a king unit, winning by killing all the other kings.
